How women change the world: President Obama delivers commencement speech

5/17/12

"Today, women are not just half this country; you're half its workforce," President Barack Obama told the graduating class of an all-female college. "More and more women are out-earning their husbands. You're more than half our college graduates, and master's graduates, and PhDs."

Single mothers and working-class women are the bedrock of the country, and many find it difficult to find the time to go back to college. As President Obama can attest, the challenges facing America are great, but the economy and job market are steadily recovering.

If you're unsure of whether or not earning a postsecondary degree is for you, consider statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showing that out of the 40 million jobs expected to open up by 2020, 60 percent will require at least an associate's degree. The majority of adults, nearly two-thirds, are thinking about going back to college in light of these job market trends, according to a recent university-administered study.

Whether you're going back to college to pursue an advanced degree or are thinking about going for the first time after spending most of your adult life raising a family, now is the perfect time to stand up, get educated and potentially change the world.
